CALL LAB (COMPUTER ASSISTED LANGUAGE LEARNING LAB)

 INTRODUCTION TO PRONUNCIATION-SOUNDS:

Each word is the combination of consonant sounds and vowel sounds. They combine to form syllables. These syllables help us to understand the methods of pronunciation of a language. Phonetics help us to understand the mechanics of pronunciation.  Phonetics is a branch of linguistics that studies the sounds of human speech.

Phonetic transcriptions are usually written in the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA), in which each English sound has its own symbol. For example, the IPA-based phonetic transcription of the word home is hoʊm, and the transcription of come is kʌm. Note that in spelling, these words are similar. They both end in ome. But their phonetic transcriptions are different, because they are pronounced differently.
For example, the transcription for become is /bɪˈkʌm/.

Phonetics have forty four phonetic alphabet to indicate the correct pronunciation of words in English. It consists of twenty vowel sounds and twenty four consonant sounds.

Write the list of consonant sounds and vowel sounds from
the Handbook of English Page no - 22, 23, 24

ICS LAB (INTERACTIVE COMMUNICATION SKILLS LAB)

ROLE PLAY

This refers to the changing of one's behavior to assume a role, either unconsciously to fill a social role, or consciously to act out an adopted role. While the Oxford English Dictionary offers a definition of role-playing as "the changing of one's behavior to fulfill a social role".

Body language plays an important role in assuming the roles and give a standard performance during the activity. Vocabulary also plays an important role to support the role played by the student.

1. Gestures: It means a movement of part of the body, especially a hand or the head, to express an idea or meaning.

2. Posture: Posture can reflect emotions, attitudes and intentions. Research has identified a wide range of postural signals and their meanings.

3. Facial Expressions:  Facial expressions are one form of nonverbal communication. These subtle - and sometimes not so subtle - expressions can communicate everything from pleasure or displeasure to surprise or boredom.

A. INTRODUCTION TO ENGLISH LANGUAGE AS A TOOL FOR GLOBAL COMMUNICATION

The importance of English Communication is to communicate effectively and no communication is possible if one doesn’t get a chance to communicate. It is natural that the demand for communication is high in this ever changing world. English plays a crucial role in communication and is no doubt the foremost and most important tool of communication all over the world. Individually everybody should strive hard to acquire very good communication skills which are the most important prerequisites to excel in one’s career.

The main purpose of English to get command over the communication skills everybody including native speakers makes mistakes. Without error no true learning can take place. Since language learning is a slow and continuous process, errors are inevitable. We have to create English speaking environments even an child starts speaking in a particular language after listening to it for many months our people and deprived of speaking abilities because they have not been properly guided, that’s why they have not been able to speak English in a proper manner. In cities they are motivated through two ways:  Instrumental and Integrative motivation. Learning a language only for rewards is instrumental motivation. On the other hand Integrative motivation includes the urge to be part of the community which is so strong that drives to pick up the language with perfection. The importance of English as a communicative tool is not realized. The illiterate parents are unable to realize the importance of education and also they do not understand the importance of communication skills which plays a vital role in their ward’s career.

B. EMPHASIS TO ACQUIRE COMMUNICATIVE COMPETENCE
Learning a language includes listening to the finer aspects of phonemes and imitating the sounds to learn the correct pronunciation. It also includes facilitating speaking activities to increase the levels of vocabulary.
English Language Communication Skills lab facilitates these activities through CALL lab and ICS lab.

CALL LAB

One of the two labs is the Computer Assisted Language Learning Lab. This consists of a lab where the language is learned with the help of desktops that consist of a software specially developed according to the specifications of the purpose.Listening skills and speaking skills are practiced here with the help of various activities programed to provide information about phonetics, word stress, intonation and accent.

ICS LAB

This is the Interactive Communication Skills Lab, designed to meet the activitiy oriented tasks of the language lab. This includes the active participation of the students through self introduction, JAM session, role play etc

CALL LAB (COMPUTER ASSISTED LANGUAGE LEARNING LAB)

STRESS:PATTERN

In linguistics, and particularly phonology, stress or accent is THE prominence given to a certain syllable in a word, or to a certain word in a phrase or sentence.

That emphasis is typically caused by such properties as increased loudness and vowel length, full articulation of the vowel, and changes in pitch. The terms stress and accent are often used synonymously in that context but are sometimes distinguished.
For example, when emphasis is produced through pitch alone, it is called pitch accent, and when produced through length alone, it is called quantitative accent. When caused by a combination of various intensified properties, it is called stress accent or dynamic accent; English uses what is called variable stress accent.

Describing places is required whenever a person visits a place and asked by the others to provide the details due to formal or informal requirements. This may include describing an office, or a house or a palace or a historical structure.
Mostly the shapes of the structures form an important clue in this. Words such as circular, rectangular, semi circular, triangular shapes are mentioned. The breadth and width of the area is mentioned. The colors of the walls, curtains, or any show pieces are to be mentioned without fail.

DESCRIBING THINGS

JAM SESSION

Introduction: Just a minute or JAM is an impromptu speech test conducted with the time limit of one minute. As a student and as a budding technocrat, you will be asked to speak on the spur of the moment to make a presentation.

Three important rules to be followed in JAM are:

  1.     No deviation
  2.     No repetition
  3.     No hesitation

For an effective JAM session
 1.      Be ready to speak in any given situation
 3.      Authorize your ideas and stick to the topic
 4.      Be creative and express new ideas
 5.      Follow sequential order
 6.      Be brief and to the point
 7.      Maintain good flow of sentences
 8.      Maintain good body language

TOPICS FOR A JAM SESSION

1. MY FAVOURITE COLOR

My favourite colour is yellow. Thinking of yellow leaves me energised. Sunshine filtering through my window heralding a new morn is the greatest joy. Its yellow sheen empowers me to take the day’s challenges in my stride. Even a small candle with a sliver of a yellow flame can dispel darkness and bring warmth to the dreariest of places. Yellow in its various hues is the colour of fire – the ultimate form of purification.

2. TEAM WORK

Teamwork is the collaborative effort of a group to achieve a common goal or to complete a task in the most effective and efficient way. This concept is seen within the greater framework of a team, which is a group of interdependent individuals who work together towards a common goal. Basic requirements for effective teamwork are an adequate team size. The context is important, and team sizes can vary depending upon the objective. A team must include at least 2 or more members, and most teams range in size from 2 to 100. Sports teams generally have fixed sizes based upon set rules, and work teams may change in size depending upon the phase and complexity of the objective. Teamwork is present in any context where a group of people are working together to achieve a common goal. These contexts include an industrial organization (formal work teams), athletics (sports teams), a school (classmates working on a project) etc.

LISTENING COMPREHENSION

Today I Rabindranath Tagore complete eighty years of my life .As I look back on the vast stretch of years that lie behind me and see in clear perspective the history of my early development, I am struck by the change that has taken place both in my own attitude and in the psychology of my countrymen -- a change that carries within it a cause of profound tragedy.

Our direct contact with the larger world of men was linked up with the contemporary history of the English people whom we came to know in those earlier days. It was mainly through their mighty literature that we formed our ideas with regard to these newcomers to our Indian shores. In those days the type of learning that was served out to us was neither plentiful nor diverse, nor was the spirit of scientific enquiry very much in evidence. Thus their scope being strictly limited, the educated of those days had recourse to English language and literature. Their days and nights were eloquent with the stately declamations of Burke, with Macaulay’s long-rolling sentences; discussions centered upon Shakespeare's drama and Byron's poetry and above all upon the large-hearted liberalism of the nineteenth-century English politics.

At the time though tentative attempts were being made to gain our national independence, at heart we had not lost faith in the generosity of the English race. This belief was so firmly rooted in the sentiments of our leaders as to lead them to hope that the victor would of his own grace pave the path of freedom for the vanquished. This belief was based upon the fact that England at the time provided a shelter to all those who had to flee from persecution in their own country. Political martyrs who had suffered for the honour of their people were accorded unreserved welcome at the hands of the English.

I was impressed by this evidence of liberal humanity in the character of the English and thus I was led to set them on the pedestal of my highest respect. This generosity in their national character had not yet been vitiated by imperialist pride. About this time, as a boy in England, I had the opportunity of listening to the speeches of John Bright, both in and outside Parliament. The large-hearted, radical liberalism of those speeches, overflowing all narrow national bounds, had made so deep an impression on my mind that something of it lingers even today, even in these days of graceless disillusionment.
